Stars, Stories, and the Mother Road

Stars, stories, and the magic of the Mother Road are all part of a Route 66 adventure with Two Lane America. So, if you’ve been dreaming about a real-deal American road trip filled with neon nights, vintage motels, storytellers, and roadside oddities, you’re in the right place.

Iconic Route 66 is no mere highway. And Two Lane America is not just another tour company.

On Route 66 the line between past and present is blurred. The diversity of the American story is made manifest with every mile and every stop.

And our guided tours of Route 66 aren't just vacations. They are a rich and colorful tapestry of memory-making moments.

We bring the story of the most famous highway in America to life with storytellers you will meet along the way, with a knowledgeable guide, and with opportunities to do more than just drive the old sun-bleached asphalt. When you ride with us you experience Route 66.

Each of our Route 66 adventures feels as though you are traveling with your own personal historian. With decades of experience, insider knowledge, and a deep love for the Mother Road, we turn every stretch of blacktop into a storybook.

Starting in Chicago and winding all the way to the Santa Monica Pier, you’ll cruise through eight states, be immersed in dozens of time capsules, and hear hundreds of fascinating stories that bring history to life. And those tales also infuse this adventure with infectious magic.

Just consider the Hollywood connection to Route 66. Did you know that in March 1939, Clark Gable and Carol Lombard followed Route 66 to Kingman, Arizona where they were married? Did you know that the legend of their first night as husband and wife has made a ghost town hotel a destination?

Kingman, as with many communities along Route 66, has a long and lengthy association with celebrities. The Chicago Cubs played an exhibition game in Kingman. George Farley "Boots" Grantham, a Major League Baseball second baseman who played for the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds, and New York Giants between 1922 and 1934 went to school in this desert crossroads. And he returned after his retirement.

Do you remember Easy Rider? In the opening scene Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda cross the Colorado River into Arizona. That bridge that now carries I40 traffic was the last to carry Route 66 traffic across the river.

And the bridge in the background is the first that carried Route 66 traffic. It is also the bridge that appears in the 1940 film adaptation of The Grapes of Wrath starring Henry Fonda.

Oatman, Arizona may be best known for the burros that have free reign in the streets and stores. But for film buffs this town is known for its starring role in Edge of Eternity and How the West Was Won.

Unlike many tour companies, ours doesn’t just show you the pretty places or the famous landmarks. We share a few of those but we also tell the story of the special places that are often overlooked by the Route 66 adventurer traveling without a knowledgeable guide.

Anybody can Google “Route 66 stops” while planning an odyssey on this storied old highway. But with our tours, those stops become an immersive experience. You meet the people that are keeping Route 66 alive, meet the colorful characters that infuse this road trip with vibrancy, and hear tales of the road from legendary storytellers.

So, if you’ve ever dreamed of following Route 66 west through the Technicolor wonderland of the Painted Desert, standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona, or meeting the people that write the books that inspire road trips, it’s time to stop dreaming.

After all, there’s only one Route 66—but there are a thousand ways to experience it. Let Two Lane America show you the best ones.
