Friendly folks and a huge selection of quality cigars make Woodland Cigar in Delaware, Ohio the perfect small-town cigar store…

If we asked you to imagine a classic cigar shop, what comes to mind? A big cigar-store Indian Humidors stocked with cigars from all over the world? Ladies and gentlemen lounging on comfy leather couches as rich cigar smells fill the air? Yep, that’s what comes to mind for us too, and it’s exactly what you’ll find at Woodland Cigar Company in downtown Delaware, Ohio.

On our visit to Woodland Cigar Company, we enjoyed a cigar with founder Ed Paxton as he told us a classic “take this job and shove it” story that we’d just never get tired of hearing.

It all started while Ed was on a family vacation in 2005. His new boss at the car dealership wanted to talk about working weekends. Ed told him exactly what he thought of bothering him on vacation, especially to talk about working weekends when he got back. Ed said, “I told him, ‘I’m not a cop, doctor or attorney,’ don’t call me while I’m on vacation.”

The encounter got Ed thinking. He was always complaining of having to go to Columbus, Ohio for his favorite cigars. What if he quit his job and opened a cigar store?

He spent the rest of that vacation counting cars as they drove through downtown Delaware and decided to pursue his dream of opening a cigar store.

Ed tells the story:

“At that time, downtown Delaware was experiencing a renaissance and I watched the foot traffic for the last half of my vacation.  I felt good about a location close to the courthouse and it just so happened a space was for rent on the east side of Sandusky Street.  I talked with a couple of good friends at work and asked if they’d like to invest a little bit of money and by the second week of June 2005, I called the telephone number on the front window. The gentleman who answered the phone, who has become over the years, one of my best friends, asked “what do you want to do with the space?” I told him, “I’d like to put a store in.”  After what seemed like 5 minutes of silence, he asked “what kind of store?”  I said, ‘cigar store.’  He said, ‘how soon can you get here?’”

The rest, as they say, is history. Since opening in 2005, it has become a staple of the community, and it’s not uncommon for Ed to have visitors from all over stop in to purchase from his robust selection of cigars.

During our time in the shop, we saw everything from regulars coming in to grab a cigar from their private locket to sons looking for a special gift for their fathers.

Whether you’re a cigar aficionado or a novice looking for cigars for a special occasion, Ed will take care of you and make you feel like a long-lost friend.

After all, it’s all part of their philosophy at Woodland Cigar: We Gather, We Smoke, We Build a Community.
