As avid road trippers, we wanted to do our part to educate everyone on just how scary distracted driving can be… These statistics are startling.
Last year we spent nearly 150 days on the road, almost half the year. Over the course of those days, weeks, and months, we saw drivers do some pretty absurd things. Most of the time, distracted driving was at the core of the insanity.
Consider this from freelance legal writer Jennifer Dawson for a second…
Distracted driving killed 3,477 people in 2015 and injured thousands more. This includes any accident or incident on the road where a driver is reported to have been distracted in some way while operating a vehicle. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has put together several statistics to further illuminate the dangers of distracted driving, including:
· In 2015, 551 non-occupants, or people like bicyclists, pedestrians, and others, were killed in distraction-affected car accidents.
· During daylight hours, over 542,000 drivers are using their cell phones while driving.
· Handheld cell phone use was most common among people aged 16 to 24, and lowest among people age 70 and older.
· 9% of drivers 15 to 19 years old who were involved in fatal crashes in 2015 were reported to be distracted while driving.
