Delaware, Ohio’s very own Pat’s Endangered Species Record Store shows good music and good vibes just never go out of style…
For a lot of us, a good local record store may be hard to find. Over the years, many have shuttered their doors, but Pat’s Endangered Species record store in Delaware, Ohio is still going strong after 38 years of bringing the good tunes to central Ohio.
Just as the name implies, Endangered Species proclaims itself to be “a wake up call to the world,” and owner Pat hopes to “bring awareness” to the local small businesses and in the process help people listen to great music.
At first glance, it’s obvious this record store is the kind of place a music lover could spend hours and hours browsing. From new records and CDs to vintage classics to a rack of the soon-to-be collectible cassette tapes, they have a little bit of it all.
As we browsed the new and used selection of vinyl records, we plied owner Pat for more information about the store’s rich history, but the humble music man was one to brag. It took us finding a picture signed by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys to finally start dragging some of the juicier stories out of him.
The friendly record store owner and his wife actually had lunch with Wilson in Cleveland one year, and we learned it’s hardly his only brush with celebrity.
A few minutes later, we commented on a signed poster of John Prine…
“Oh, he played in the shop,” Pat said casually.
“Go on…” we insisted.
Apparently, in the 38 years of the shop’s existence, it’s hosted a who’s who of musical talents ranging from Bonnie Raitt to John Prine to the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Over the years, the shop has seen music recorded on all types of medium from vinyl to cassettes to CDs, and, of course, it’s now seeing the resurgence of vinyl’s popularity. Through it all, the store has thrived and even added space. It’s living proof people not only love music, but love buying it from local shops- a rarity in most small towns.
Whether you want a top-notch turntable, a well-priced used CD or record, or the newest, hottest LPs, Pat’s Endangered Species record store has you covered.
And yes, we walked out with a couple albums. We just couldn’t resist.
